Joint Water Declaration

We hereby acknowledge under our Water Declaration and through our respective laws and inalienable authority, the protection of major lakes and waterways within our territories that we have jointly identified for protection and designation as Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCA).

  • Our two Nations jointly declare that we hold significant and inalienable our relationships with water; relationships that are sacred to who we are as Biigtigong Nishnaabeg and as Netmizaaggamig Nishnaabeg.
  • We support and respect each other in our joint and separate efforts to protect and preserve water as vessel for the dynamic forces of life; essential to us and all our relatives in our territories.
  • We recognize that water knows no boundaries, as it travels and flows across and throughout our respective territories, and we express gratitude for the gifts that water gives to us.
  • We confirm through this declaration our relationships and responsibilities to water with our respective laws and efforts to care for and protect water’s quality, quantity and flow for the benefit of all living beings.

Fun Fact

The township of White River is known as the home of the real-life Winnie-the-Pooh. During World War I, military lieutenant and training veterinarian Harry Colebourn travelled to White River by train. When he arrived, he met an orphaned black bear. The bear’s name was Winnie, short for the Canadian city of Winnipeg. Harry eventually took Winnie all the way to England, to the London Zoo. There, Winnie met Christopher Robin. Since 1988, White River celebrates their famous bear every year with a festival known as “Poohfest.” You can read more about the story here: Northern Ontario Travel.
